Sample preparation
DNA & RNA extraction services for research
Start with the material you have. GSN reviews DNA or RNA extraction requirements, coordinates the work, and helps define quality checks for the next stage of your research.
Match preparation to the sample and study
Extraction for PCR, short-read sequencing, and long-read sequencing can require different approaches. Planning begins with the organism, source material, storage history, and intended use of the extracted nucleic acid.
Plant samples, microbial pellets, tissues, and other research materials require an initial review. Sample acceptance and the extraction method are confirmed for each project, including low-biomass samples and challenging sample matrices.
Plan extraction and quality control together
Concentration alone does not establish suitability for a downstream assay. The agreed work can include quantity and integrity assessment. Long DNA fragments for HiFi sequencing and RNA requirements for gene-expression studies should be discussed before processing.
If initial results do not meet the agreed input criteria, next steps depend on the QC findings and remaining material. Starting weight or volume alone cannot guarantee a successful extraction.
Review the shipment before dispatch
Share the sample list and handling history before sending material. GSN coordinates the appropriate container, preservation conditions, temperature, receiving address, and documentation. International shipments require review of material eligibility and the relevant shipment requirements before dispatch.
The quotation should identify extraction, QC, sample return or onward sequencing as separate parts of the agreed scope. This makes it easier to compare options and plan your research budget.
Define your deliverables
- Extracted DNA or RNA within the agreed scope
- Sample identification and extraction information
- QC results specified in the quotation
- Coordination of onward sequencing when requested
Included tests and analyses follow the approved quotation for your project.
Common questions
A few useful answers
Can every plant or microbial sample be accepted?
Acceptance is project-specific. Please identify the species and sample matrix so that the method and material eligibility can be reviewed before shipment.
How much material should I prepare?
Input depends on the material and extraction method. Request project-specific guidance before collection or packaging; a single minimum weight is not appropriate for every sample.
Can I request extraction without sequencing?
Describe extraction and QC as your requested scope. GSN can discuss the proposed work, deliverables, and handling of any remaining material in the quotation process.
